Jobs are processes the server runs asynchronously in the background to perform time consuming, performance demanding or regular tasks. E.g. execution of calculated features, import/export of data from external systems or files, internal system functions like the management of system caches and others more.

The Application Server predefines job types that can be configured by the user by setting execution parameters for a job. An example of a job type is the execution of a calculated feature. In this case the feature would be an execution parameter of the job.

Jobs can be triggered by the system itself, by a user via stored jobs definitions, by observation monitoring events, by other jobs or by manual user interaction. The execution of triggered jobs is handled by the job engine - a queuing and load balancing mechanism that allows to regulate the performance impact of jobs on the overall system.

The user either implicitly or explicitly creates a job definition that holds all information necessary for the Application Server to perform a specific job. That job definition is then passed to the job engine.
