The output of a calculation i.e. the result of the execution of a calculation is a series of observations with a property structure for type specific observation data that conforms to the property structure defined for the observations of a specific feature type. The property structure for type specific observation data of the output of a calculation is simply called the output format, and named after the feature type that defines the same format for observations of features of that type. E.g. If the output format of a calculation is Hydrostatic pressure it means that the property structure used for type specific observation data of the output of this calculation is the same property structure as defined for observations of a feature type called Hydrostatic pressure.

Table 1 lists the three different ways a calculation can define its output format.

Name

Notes

Explicit

Calculation types with explicit output format predefine the output format and will always produce observations of this output format.

Implicit by pin

The output format of observations generated by calculations with implicit by pin output definition is defined by the feature or calculation connected to a specially designated input pint, hat pin is called the defining input pin. Therefore the output format of calculations of this type is not fixed but depends on the algorithm.

Implicit by setting

The output format of observations generated by calculations with implicit by setting output definition, will have a configuration setting that allows the user to choose the output format from a list of feature types.
