Feature types are the basic templates that define which properties are used to describe a feature, how this feature can be connected to other features and other things more. The feature type defines the property structures for the feature's type specific data and for the type specific data of the feature's observations.

Each feature is of a specific feature type. The feature type of a feature is defined when the feature is created and immutable thereafter. The Application Server provides a list of predefined feature types that can be used. For each feature type the Application Server provides a specific icon that can be utilized by clients to visually distinguish features of different type.

Feature types are modular. i.e. new feature types can be installed easily when published by Pöyry Infra GmbH. However feature types can only be used if the installed license allows it. The user cannot create his own feature types. Feature types are deployed via the Distribution Server.
