Theoretically the Application Server Database will run on any computer where one of the supported Microsoft Database Servers can be run (see Microsoft's documentation of SQL Server for details). Since the actual hardware requirements above that are depending on the actual usage of the server (number of databases, amount of data written and read etc.) it is not possible to give explicit hardware requirements. Generally - and not surprisingly - the more intense the usage of the Database Server the better hardware you should choose.

The Application Server Database is the place where most of the valuable data is stored. You should therefore choose a hardware that provides the reliability that suits your information security requirements. Also when the Application Server Database is down you won't be able to use Redbex, therefore again you should choose a hardware that provides the reliability you need.

Redbex uses the power of the SQL Server database engine to effectively query and modify data. Therefore the hardware on which the Application Server Database is installed is also crucial for the system's performance. It is simply impossible to give a recommendation on the hardware for the Application Server Database since there are many parameters that influence the needed processing power; among them number of simultaneous users, amount of processing done by the users, amount of processing done by background jobs, amount of data stored in the database etc.

We tested the Application Server Database on simple Laptops as well as on multi processor systems with high performance data storage arrays, Depending on your usage of the System you might need something in between these two extremes. Generally speaking - and again not surprisingly - a database server with more memory more CPU power and faster discs will perform better.

Resource

Minimum Requirement

Recommendation

Network connection to Application Server

100 MBit/s

≥1000 MBit/s

If not running on the same machine the Application Server Database and the Application Server should be connected through a network with minimal latency and high throughput. A Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection is usually not suitable.

Disk space

200

≥1GB

Before installing the Application Server Database you should make sure that you have at least 200MB free disk storage space in the %SQLDATABASEPATH% directory on your Database server.

Processor cores

1

≥4

When accessing the Database Server the Application Server uses parallel queries to speed things up. More cores = better performance.
