Depending on your configuration the Smart Client uses TCP and/or HTTP to access the Application Server, therefore the Smart Client needs to be able to connect to the Application Server on the configured ports.

Firewalls (on the Server as well as on the Client), and other security software (again on the Server as well as on the Client) must be configured accordingly.
